Some of you may remember the protests in Oaxaca that quickly escalated into blazing buses, missing activists, tear gas and a number of deaths. Now, all eyes should be on Guerrero. For those of you who need a frame of reference, Acapulco is in the state of Guerrero.

I received a bulletin not long ago from the Tlachinollan Human Rights Center. On November 14, 800 teachers and students took to the streets in an effort to open 75 new teaching position and in support of the elementary education degree. They were met with 300 federal policemen. Police forces beat, arrested and fired at protesters.

Last I heard, there were 200 wounded, 6 arrests and innumerable individuals reported missing .

I was crossing the street yesterday when I saw a man out of the corner of my eye. He was just a step or two behind me, wobbling along on what was left of his legs. I didn’t want to turn around for fear of being rude and staring. I thought he might need help crossing the street.

I then realized that there are so many social constructions that keep us from reaching out to one another. My first fear was that he would be offended by me offering to help him with something he can do perfectly well on his own. My second fear was that, in this still relatively machista society, it would be an aberration for a young woman with a baby in tow to help a grown man, disability or not. So I just kept going, like everyone else.

“La Gringa” over at LivingEthnogrophy tipped me off on an interactive documentary that definitely needs to be seen by more people.

“The aim of this documentary is to inform the public, and investigate alternatives to the intense polarization that is hindering progress on the immigration issue,” say the creators of 9500 Liberty.

The documentary takes place in Prince William County, Virginia. It lets you get up close and personal with immigrants, activists and the anti-immigrants who threaten them. Very moving. Very stirring. There are currently 40 videos and all that I have seen so far provide a unique and inside look at the immigration issue.
